If you've been shopping for an electric bike, you've probably seen the terms Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 — and wondered what they actually mean. It's one of the most common questions we get here at HB Electric in Huntington Beach, so we're breaking it all down for you.

Why E-Bike Classes Matter

E-bike classes were created to help regulate where electric bikes can be ridden and how fast they can go. Different classes are allowed in different places — including bike paths, trails, and roads — so knowing your class matters, especially here in Huntington Beach where the oceanfront boardwalk has specific rules.

Class 1 Electric Bikes

Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assist only with no throttle. The motor only kicks in when you're pedaling, and it cuts off at 20 mph.

✅ Most widely accepted class — fewest restrictions
✅ Great for fitness-focused riders who want a boost
❌ No throttle — you must pedal to engage the motor

Best for: Trail riding, multi-use paths, and anywhere throttles are prohibited.

Class 2 Electric Bikes

Class 2 e-bikes have both pedal assist and a throttle, with a top assisted speed of 20 mph. You can engage the motor without pedaling using the throttle.

✅ Allowed on most bike paths and lanes (same as Class 1 in most areas)

Class 3 Electric Bikes

Class 3 e-bikes are pedal-assist only (no throttle in most configurations) with a higher top assisted speed of 28 mph. Some Class 3 bikes can also have a throttle, but it's limited to 20 mph.

Here in Huntington Beach, the oceanfront boardwalk has specific rules about e-bike use. Generally, Class 1 and Class 2 bikes at low speeds are the most boardwalk-friendly. Always check current city regulations and be courteous to pedestrians — especially during busy beach days.
